Measures for the organisation against exposure to contaminated soil during maintenance work

• Ensure that your employees are regularly trained on the subject of 'contaminated soil'.
• Always take discontinued working activities and employees’ complaints seriously.
• Register the employees for each case if it later emerges that they have come into contact with heavily contaminated soil.

• Investigate if there is a case of  contaminated soil at the location.  To do so you can contact the municipality or the province. The spot cards which you can access via municipal or provincial websites or on www.bodemloket.nl are indicative.
• Soil is said to be heavily contaminated if the intervention value is exceeded. If the intervention value is not exceeded, but only the background value, then the soil is said to be lightly contaminated.
• As far as possible, avoid executing work where soil is contaminated (alternative route for cables and piping, temporary switch over).
• If working in contaminated soil cannot be avoided and/or if the soil quality is unclear, then determine the extent of the contamination and the respective safety class, if required make a BUS report and set up a H&S plan development phase. Involve a consultancy in this if necessary.
• Check whether the planned materials (cables and piping) are suitable for use in the contaminated soil.
• In a case of heavily contaminated soil, assign the project to a Kwalibo BRL SIKB 7000-7001 certified company. If electricity, gas and/or heating work activities are to be be carried out, they must be carried out by employees qualified for that purpose under the responsibility of the Kwalibo certified company.
• In a case of heavily contaminated soil, involve an environmental specialist who has Kwalibo BRL 6000 authorisation to supervise.
